The Steamboat Cabaret' is made up of Patrick Dawes, Samantha Eames, Toby Nowell and guest vocalist Marc Gauvin. They are the stylistic successor to 'Patrick and Eugene'.
The band draws influence from the 1920's and 30's jazz, vaudeville, latin rhythms, chanson and sunshine pop. The upbeat rhythms, blistering horn arrangements and sweet melodies collide to create a vibrant musical style.
Patrick, who has previously played with The Herbaliser, Richie Havens and Groove Armada produces the music and plays a wide array of percussion. Samantha provides a mix of banjo, ukelele, bass and melodica. Toby plays trumpet, saxophones, clarinet and euphonium and scores some fine arrangements.
As well as both Samantha and Patrick, Marc Gauvin provides guest vocals on 'There is a Sun' and 'French Bean'. Marc lives in France and came to Patrick's attention a few years ago when he expressed his liking for the sound of 'Patrick and Eugene'. Check out his brilliant promo for 'Sticky Toffee Pudding'
This album does come with sad news. In December, just after it a was finished, Samantha passed away after a two year struggle with cancer. Even though she was very ill she was determined to finish this record, revealing a real strength of character. Just like Samantha herself, this music is sweet, soulful, light hearted but full of love and life. We hope others enjoy it the same.
